Business Practices and Ethics is an important course that provides information about standards and ethics requirements for valuers in general and, more specifically, for valuers who belong to the Appraisal Institute. Through discussion questions and examples, the class compares behavior and actions that illustrate violations of the Code of Professional Ethics, and participants learn how referrals can be made. Participants are also introduced to the Appraisal Institute Guide Notes to the Standards of Professional Practice and use these Guide Notes to resolve everyday appraisal practice problems. At the end of the course, they learn about common errors in appraisal reports and review reports, and they respond to questions about challenges that arise in appraisal practice such as requests for updates and requests to change or add intended users. These are common business practice issues that appraisers encounter in various assignments, including mortgage lending, litigation, and property tax appeal. Other real-life scenarios in the course illustrate less common business practice issues such as an appraiser’s obligation when illegal or criminal behavior is observed.

Certificate Policy

Certificates for national programs are processed and distributed by the national office rather than the chapter office and can take up to two weeks. You will have an opportunity to download your certificate from the new website when you log into your account. Should you need a certificate expedited, please fill out the certificate form on the national website and notify the chapter office prior to the start of class so they can coordinate with the national office. It can take 3-5 business days from submission of the form until receipt of the certificate, so please schedule your request accordingly.

Attendance Requirements

PHOTO ID REQUIRED: Students will need to send a photo (ex: driver license photo) to after registering. Before emailing your license feel free to mark out any personal information you don’t feel comfortable sharing, all we really need is your name, address and your photo.  Our instructor will be verifying photo identification of students during roll call at the beginning and throughout the class. This is a requirement, and you will not receive credit if we do not have a photo to verify your identification with.

IMPORTANT: Our instructor must be able to see/hear you and you must be able to see/hear the instructor. Zoom Meeting allows student/instructor interaction through video/audio and the chat function. This is a requirement, and you will not receive credit if you do not have video/audio capabilities to see/hear the instructor/allow the instructor to see/hear you.

CLASS MATERIALS: Students are responsible for downloading or obtaining hard copies of the class materials. If downloading, please download before the class. Materials can be found in your Appraisal Institute account.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Internet Access, Computer with Webcam/Camera, Microphone and Speakers. Joining the offering with a cell phone is not recommended as these devices often lead to connection problems.  Cell phones are better utilized solely as a secondary device.

Cancellation Policy

  • Up to 15 days prior to program start date, $50 cancellation fee.
